Howstrake Women's Institute - 1988

The Womens' Institute reached the Isle of Man in 1950. The Onchan and District W.I. was formed in 1953 and soon exceeded its membership limit of 180 and had a waiting list. Additional Onchan institutes followed, Onchan Jubilee in 1965 and Avondale in 1976. In 1988 it was felt that the ever-increasing population of Onchan District justified a fourth Institute and that the new housing on and around Bank's Howe would be an appropriate area to cover. A Formation Meeting was held at the Howstrake Hotel and The Howstrake Institute came into being in 1989 with Mrs. Moira Vaughan as President. The new institute met at the Howstrake Hotel until the hotel's closure in the same year and thereafter its meetings were held at the King Edward Bay Golf and Country Club.
